From Holy Week processions to midnight services, how Christians around the world celebrate Easter — and what it means.
For Christians, Easter is the year's most important day — more important, in the church's own reckoning, than Christmas. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus: three days after His crucifixion, the tomb was found empty, and He appeared alive to His followers. As Paul put it in 1 Corinthians 15:14, if Christ has not been raised, the Christian faith is empty. That is why Easter is kept with such depth and variety.
The date moves each year. In Western churches, Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. Orthodox churches use the older Julian calendar, so their Easter often falls on another Sunday. But wherever and whenever it falls, the shape is similar: a solemn week, a quiet Saturday, a joyful Sunday.
Holy Week Before Easter
Easter is not a single day but the end of a week. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, remembering Jesus's entry into Jerusalem. Maundy Thursday recalls the Last Supper. Good Friday is the Christian year's most solemn day: churches remember the crucifixion with readings of the Passion story and silence. Holy Saturday is a quiet day of waiting; after nightfall many churches hold the Easter Vigil.
Spain: Semana Santa Processions
In Spain, Holy Week — Semana Santa — is among Europe's most dramatic religious events. In cities like Seville, brotherhoods carry enormous floats bearing statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary through the streets, with marching bands and candlelit penitents. The processions can last through the night.
Greece: Midnight Fire, Red Eggs
Greek Easter, called Pascha, is the Orthodox calendar's most important feast. At midnight on Holy Saturday, churches go dark; then the priest lights a single candle and the flame is passed from person to person. As the congregation sings "Christos Anesti" — Christ is risen — fireworks go off outside. Families crack red-dyed eggs against each other.
Italy: Pasqua, the Easter Dove
In Italy, Easter is Pasqua, celebrated with food as much as with church. Families share lamb, artichokes, and a sweet dove-shaped bread called colomba. In Florence, a cart loaded with fireworks is set off before the cathedral on Easter Sunday. Easter Monday is a holiday for picnics.
Poland: Wet Monday
Polish Easter begins with Palm Sunday, when families bring decorated palms to church to be blessed. Easter Sunday brings a family breakfast of eggs, sausage, and a lamb-shaped cake. But the most famous Polish tradition comes the day after: Easter Monday, Śmigus-Dyngus or Wet Monday, when people splash each other with water in the streets — a springtime celebration of cleansing and new life.
Mexico: Passion Plays and Capirotada
In Mexico, Holy Week is marked by some of the world's largest Passion plays. The most famous takes place in Iztapalapa, near Mexico City, drawing over two million spectators. Many families keep a meatless week, eating dishes like capirotada, a spiced bread pudding, and fish.
Philippines: Salubong
In the Philippines, where most people are Catholic, Holy Week is observed with deep devotion. Good Friday brings solemn processions. Joy comes at dawn on Easter Sunday with Salubong, when statues of the risen Christ and the Virgin Mary are carried toward each other and church bells ring.
Nigeria: All-Night Prayer
In Nigeria and much of West Africa, Holy Week begins with early-morning prayer services; Good Friday is kept as a day of fasting. Easter Sunday is the opposite: a feast in every sense. After joyful services with singing and dancing, families gather for large meals: jollof rice, egusi soup, pounded yam, fried chicken.
Germany: Easter Trees, Bonfires
Germany has one of Europe's most distinctive Easter traditions: the Osterbaum, the Easter tree. A bare branch is decorated with painted eggs hung on strings. On Holy Saturday night, many communities gather for the Osterfeuer, the Easter bonfire, lit in churchyards and public squares as a symbol of resurrection light breaking through the darkness. Children hunt for eggs hidden by the Easter Bunny.
The Symbols of Easter
Some Easter symbols are shared almost everywhere. Eggs stand for new life; hot cross buns, spiced buns marked with a cross, are traditionally eaten on Good Friday in Britain and across the Commonwealth. The sunrise itself has become a symbol: many churches hold sunrise services on Easter morning.
What unites all these traditions is the same hope: that death is not the end of the story. To understand that faith more deeply, read our guide on what faith means, and Psalm 23 for the same trust in dark times. The other great Christian festival has its own story — see our guide to Christmas traditions in ten countries.
