The idea dates back to the 1850s, when a Vincentian priest named Pedro Maria Boss suggested a monument to honour Princess Isabel, the daughter of Emperor Pedro II. The project was never approved. It woke up in 1921, when the archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro proposed a statue of Christ on the mountain's 700-metre summit, visible from every part of the city. A Catholic group organised a "Monument Week" to collect donations, citizens petitioned President Epitácio Pessoa, and the foundation stone was laid on 4 April 1922.
From Sketch to Statue
The design was chosen by competition. The Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa won with a sketch of Christ holding a cross in one hand and the world in the other. But as the project developed, the design changed. The artist Carlos Oswald is credited with proposing the open-armed pose we know today. The change turned the statue from a religious symbol into a universal one: not a king holding power, but a figure with open arms.
Building it was an international effort. The French sculptor Paul Landowski designed the head and hands, and the Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida carved the face. The statue was made of reinforced concrete, covered in a mosaic of small soapstone tiles. The pieces were made in France, shipped to Brazil, and carried up the mountain by the small railway that still runs to the summit. Construction took nine years, from 1922 to 1931, and cost about US$250,000 at the time. On 12 October 1931, the statue was dedicated in a ceremony broadcast by shortwave radio.

It stands on an 8-metre (26-foot) pedestal, making 38 metres (125 feet) in total. It weighs 635 metric tons, and it stands at the peak of Corcovado mountain, 700 metres above sea level, inside the Tijuca National Park. It is the largest Art Deco sculpture in the world, and it is struck by lightning several times a year — teams of workers regularly climb it to repair the soapstone tiles.

From the viewing platform, the whole of Rio spreads out below: the beaches, the bay, and the Sugarloaf. Early morning is the best time to go, before the crowds and the clouds build up.
